Press Release - Food Scrap Recycling in Old Saybrook

Food Scrap Recycling Logo

The Public Works Department announces a new Food Scrap Recycling Program.  Beginning immediately residents can utilize the new Food Scraps Recycling Drop-Off area at the Old Saybrook Transfer Station.

All you need to do is collect food scraps in a container at home then bring and empty into the designated bin at the Transfer Station.  You can also drop off the waste in compostable bags.

Accepted items include:  fruit, vegetables, meat fish, bones, dairy, coffee grinds, tea bags (no staples), bread, pasta, rice & grains, egg shells, chips and snacks, nuts and seeds, leftover spoiled food, expired food and cut flowers.

No plastic bags, packaging, stickers, rubber bands or twist ties are allowed.  No pet waste.

The cost of disposing of garbage is increasing rapidly. Please do your part! Recycling food scraps into compost reduces the amount of trash in our waste stream, save taxpayer dollars and returns nutrients and energy to the environment.

Bear with us as we start up this program. We have a lot to learn so we are happy to hear your suggestions: please contact larry.bonin@oldsaybrookct.gov or carl.fortuna@oldsaybrookct.gov.

All vehicles entering the Transfer Station must have a valid permit. Permits are free and may be obtained at the Old Saybrook Town Hall.
