OLD SAYBROOK WANTS TO ENCOURAGE FOOD SCRAP RECYCLING

With the cost of trash removal skyrocketing, food scrap recycling can make a big difference.

OLD SAYBROOK, CT (June 6, 2023) – The Town of Old Saybrook announced today that stainless steel recycling bins will be sold at half price at the transfer station on Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 9am-noon. Not only will using these bins help our environment, it will also reduce the town’s cost of waste disposal.

The Old Saybrook Waste & Recycling Committee was appointed by the Board of Selectmen to assist with innovative ways to reduce the amount of trash the transfer station carts away to out of state landfills. Initiatives to date include textile recycling, paint recycling and battery collection. Literally tons of trash have been removed from the system by these three simple measures. Now, the committee is excited to announce a food scrap recycling effort. With funds received from the small bottle (nips) distributors, Old Saybrook is subsidizing the purchase by our residents of stainless-steel counter-top recycling bins. These attractive bins will sit comfortably on your counter-top and you can remove all kinds of food scraps- from meat bones to vegetable scraps to other organics. At the transfer station, there are blue receptacles for residents to deposit their food scraps. By providing these counter-top bins at a discount, the Committee is hoping to expand the amount of food waste that is kept out of our trash stream.

On June 17, 2023, from 9am to noon, members of the committee will be at the transfer station to sell food scrap recycling bins for $10 each to town residents. These bins are normally priced at over $20. Funds received will go back to our small bottle fund to either buy more bins and/or start other initiatives. Only 100 bins will be available on June 17. If the program is a success, the town will continue to subsidize more bin purchases. Information on food scrap recycling will be available by members of the committee that morning.

The Waste & Recycling Committee consists of Barry O’Nell, Diane Stober and Victor Benni. First Selectman Carl Fortuna also attends these meetings.
