Press Release – William Claffey Selected as Public Works Director

Old Saybrook Town Seal

I am pleased to announce that William “Bill” Claffey has been selected to be the next Director of Public Works for the Town of Old Saybrook. Bill has been a member of the Public Works Department for more than 17 years, beginning part-time in July 2006 and becoming a full-time Highway Maintainer II in October of that same year. He was promoted to Highway Maintainer III in August of 2009 and became the Public Works Crew Leader in February 2022. He has been serving the town in the role of Interim Director of Public Works since October 2022.

Bill was selected unanimously from a group of qualified applicants to continue to lead the Public Works Department where he has been a great asset. He stepped up without hesitation when the need arose and we are grateful for his valuable skills as well as his knowledge of the town and the needs of the department. Bill is a valued member of the First Selectman’s management team and his department oversees many essential functions of the town, including the Transfer Station and maintenance of 75 miles of roadways, 750 catchbasins, snowplowing, tree work, guardrail repair, street sweeping, paving, sidewalk repair, landscaping, and decorating the town for the holidays, among other things. We look forward to his continued leadership and congratulate him on his official promotion.
