Fictitious Trade Name Certificate

Forms & Permits

Section 35-1 of the Connecticut General Statutes requires any person(s) doing business in this state to file a trade name certificate with the “Town Clerk in the town in which the business is.” A Trade Name Certificate is for consumer protection purposes only, identifying those doing business in a town under a fictitious name. This certificate does not protect the registered name from use by someone else. Failure to file a certificate results in a $500 fine. The prescribed form must be legible, notarized and the original presented to the Town Clerk’s office for filing. The fee for such filing is $10.00 by cash or check payable to “Old Saybrook Town Clerk.” Once recorded, the individual will receive a certified copy for their personal record.
