Press Release from the Town of Old Saybrook

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) will be performing extensive repair work to two bridges on Great Hammock Road in 2021.  The bridges, which are in poor condition, carry traffic over the Back River and Plum Bank Creek and repairs must be made to ensure public safety. Great Hammock Road will be closed to through traffic at each bridge location during construction for 11 weeks in the spring before Memorial Day and the fall after Labor Day. This will be a complete road closure which will allow the contractor to finish the work within the allotted contractual time frame. In pre-construction meetings, it was determined that leaving one lane open for traffic would add months to the completion of this work and increase costs significantly. Additionally, in preparation for the work over Plum Bank Creek, a road closure will occur this fall (2020) from October 5th through the 24th. If there are any changes in the construction schedule, an additional press release will be issued.
