Press Release - First Selectman Regarding Delivery of the Shoreline Times

June 4, 2019

Press Release:  From Old Saybrook First Selectman Carl P. Fortuna, Jr. Regarding Delivery of the Shoreline Times

Over the last several years, I have received numerous calls and emails demanding the delivery of the Shoreline Times cease immediately. Not only do the newspapers pollute our lawns, roads, waterways and driveways, they often sit for months deteriorating in place. The newspapers are a general nuisance. The complaints made directly to the newspaper contact persons have fallen on deaf ears. There have been many stories that homeowners have called Hearst Media (publisher) requesting a stop in delivery and have been promised that delivery will stop…and it doesn’t. I have expressed my frustration on behalf of our community but that also does not seem to work. We need a community organized campaign and it needs to spread on Facebook and wherever else we can spread the word. I believe this campaign should have two elements:

Flood this company with emails. The persons to contact are Frank Horvath (FHorvath@hearst.com), Helen Bennett (helen.bennett@hearstmediact.com) and Susan Braden Hull (Susan.Braden@hearstmediact.com). Tell them to stop delivery in Old Saybrook!

I am hesitant to suggest this but a letter writing campaign to the main advertisers in the newspaper informing them that consumers will be advised to NOT shop at their businesses if they continue to advertise in the Shoreline Times. I do not want to hurt any business but their advertising is the lifeblood of a free newspaper. Advertising dollars can and will go elsewhere.

Please feel free to contact me with your suggestions. We must use our best efforts as a community to stop this newspaper.
